Living Room Project

This summer I was invited by my dear friend Alberta (of ASKLabs and FaceTopo) to hear artist Lee Mingwei speak to a small group at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. He reviewed several of his past projects, some of which moved me to tears, and invited the members of the group to be ‘hosts’ at future sessions of The Living Room Project, bringing in personal objects or collections in order to spark conversation and social interaction amongst visitors of the musuem. As a minimalist and someone who appreciates beautifully designed objects that exist primarily to serve a function, ahem furniture, I…

Stripes in Contract Magazine

Stripes Floor Mats for FilzFelt were featured in the latest Contract Magazine. IA Interior Architects’ Richelle Nolan says, “Stripes has the refined floor design we strive for, providing a mix of masculine and feminine aesthetics. Chairs can roll with ease from one surface to another and the collection offers acoustic properties in concrete-laden offices.” Check out the December issue here.

Interior Design Fall Market Tabloid

Thanks Interior Design Magazine for featuring my hanging panel collection for FilzFelt in the Fall Market Tabloid issue! It’s great to be in the company of so many talented designers. View the full collection of hanging panels here.

Stripes Floor Mat Collection for FilzFelt

My Stripes Floor Mat Collection for FilzFelt just launched. The limited edition collection combines my favorite natural material with my love of all things striped and sustainable. Stripes Floor Mats are made from reclaimed post-industrial remnant felt that is cut and bound together with a zigzag stitch in durable grey nylon thread. Each of the three sizes (large 6×9, medium 4×6, and a 2×8 runner) is available in two colorways that feature neutral greys with pops of color here and there. The collection is available for purchase exclusively on filzfelt.com, while inventory lasts.              …

Interior Design Ad

I was thrilled to see the advertising campaign for The Kelly Harris Smith Collection for FilzFelt in a recent issue of Interior Design magazine. The Arrow hanging panel featured is perhaps my favorite of the seven new patterns, although all of the designs are intended to provide varying areas of opacity and transparency through strategic placement of the patterning.

Contract Magazine Designers Select

I was delighted to share some of my favorite current products for retail interiors with Contract Magazine. Products include Metallics by 3Form, Palindrome by Rich Brilliant Willing, and Shade by Chilewich. Take a look at the full issue here.

New Hanging Panel Collection for FilzFelt

My hanging panel collection for FilzFelt launched earlier this month. This photo shows me in my studio with my favorite pattern, Arrow. The patterns were designed following the success of some of my earlier work for FilzFelt, including this popular one. The seven hanging panel designs—Arch, Arrow, Dash, Dot, Loop, Pitch, and Square—begin with the seemingly straightforward circle, triangle, and square. But by combining, repeating, and scaling, the shapes form complex patterning inspired by halftone reprographic techniques. Repeated shapes shift in scale and spacing to create a gradient-like effect. The intentional location of each pattern’s opacity allows a bit more…

WantedDesign Workshop Report on Core77

Core77 thoroughly reviewed the 2017 Wanted Design Student Workshop, themed “HyperHybrid.” It was fantastic to be the textile mentor this year and to be surrounded by such creative talent. The photo below shows the students, mentors, critics and WantedDesign founders at the final review. Check out the projects on Core77 here.

Q&A Interview on DIGMA

DIGMA’s tell (almost) all interview of me and Traci about the early days of FilzFelt can be viewed here. Design Industry Group of Massachusetts (DIGMA) is an organization dedicated to strengthening the relationship of design to business, education, production and leadership in Massachusetts.

Dreamcatchers Installation at WantedDesign Brooklyn

I am excited to install Dreamcatchers at WantedDesign Brooklyn next week. I’m promoting environmental re-use and sustainability with a modern interpretation of the traditional Native American keepsake. The concept utilizes post-production remnant material from Submaterial, a partner manufacturer of FilzFelt. I first played (well, danced) with the strips of remnant felt over a year ago on a photo shoot in New Mexico, where Submaterial is headquartered.

WantedDesign Design Schools Workshop

I’m thrilled and honored to be the textile mentor at this year’s WantedDesign Design Schools Workshop. Every May, WantedDesign brings a group of students from International design schools together to participate in the WantedDesign Design Schools Workshop. Conceived as a collaborative activity rather than a competitive one where teams in this activity are composed by students from different schools and backgrounds.  This year’s theme is “HyperHybrid.” The challenge is the ideation of projects that celebrate differences through multifunction objects and a production process that combines new technologies with the traditional making process and materials.

New Site

Hi! I’m both nervous and excited to softly launch kellyharrissmith.com. I’m way past my deadline to do so, so it’s going live without being perfect (um, logo and fonts for example). I’m constantly designing, so you can think of this as a work in process! I spent the past eight years building a successful brand (this one. . . oh, and this one too) and now I’m focusing on my own designs. This site will document my future projects, but to kick it off, I’ve collected and documented some highlights from the last ten + years. To be completely honest, I’m still trying to figure out what type of designer I am. I love to collaborate,…
